DESCRIPTION:What role does the built environment play in positively shapin
g the experience of imprisonment and contributing to future desistance fro
m offending? Can progressive\, humane architecture effectively challenge t
he negative attitudes to prisoners that are sometimes held by prison servi
ce personnel and society at large? Exaggerated claims about ‘good’ pri
son design are frequently made by academics\, architects and journalists\,
and some Nordic prisons are especially susceptible to being fetishized to
a degree that elides their function as high-security establishments that
inflict harm. In this lecture\, Professor Yvonne Jewkes will relate two pe
rsonal experiences of being part of teams planning and designing new priso
ns in countries that might be characterised as socially and politically co
nservative. The projects’ divergences\, however\, were more stark than t
heir similarities\, and only one of the facilities is likely to turn out t
o be an example of imaginative\, humane thinking in contemporary prison de
sign\, even though both prisons were initially conceived as such. Where on
e fell foul of a highly risk-averse and security-obsessed corrections cult
ure\, the other has benefitted from a prison service prepared to take risk
s and commission a design underpinned by research evidence and internation
al best practice. In the lecture\, Yvonne will discuss how her ESRC-funded
research sought to challenge not only conventional perspectives and pract
ices in the planning and design process\, but also challenged prevailing o
pinions among those who commission\, design and operate prisons about the
people who get sent to custody. \nSpeakers:\nProfessor Yvonne Jewkes (Univ
