DESCRIPTION:Visible light is the most pervasive feature of the observable
Universe to humans\, so its explanation has assumed a pre-eminent role in
our attempts to understand the physical world around us.\n\nThis conferenc
e will start with an examination of light and its properties with the form
ulation of the classical theory of optics by Newton\, Huygens and others\,
and then move on to the theory of colours which involved not only natural
philosophers\, but artists and writers.\n\nThe understanding of electrici
ty and magnetism in the 19th century led ultimately to the formulation of
the electromagnetic theory of light summarised in Maxwell's equations whic
h underpin the vast range of technologies still in daily use. In the 20th
century\, the role of the speed of light became very important in relativi
ty and quantum theory.\n\nThe conference will examine the steps in our und
erstanding of light to illuminate its history in our culture and in the te
chnological developments over the past few decades.\n\nMore information an

nature of space and matter\, through the founding disputes of modern scien

between leading thinkers and their vital role in establishing successive v

DESCRIPTION:This event will be a one-day conference on Saturday 8th June 2
019 on Paradigm Shifts Across the Ages. The history of physics can be view
ed as consisting of major paradigm shifts followed by decades and even cen
turies working through the consequences of the dominating paradigm. As exa
mples\, the Copernican revolution overtook the millennium-old Ptolemaic sy
stem of astronomy\, and likewise Newton's mechanics replaced the ancient A
ristotelian system. More recently\, the advent of special relativity and q
uantum mechanics superceded the classical ideas of time\, space and matter
. This conference will examine how physics has developed from antiquity to

DESCRIPTION:Doug Wigdor is a St Cross alumnus and top New York employment
Lawyer. Wigdor has been at the forefront of some of the most widely public
ized sexual harassment and sexual assault cases that have made headline ne
ws around the world.\n\nJoin Doug Wigdor for a breakfast roundtable discus
sing working with the media: the do's and don'ts\, the risk and rewards of
working with the Press.\n\nThe truth is\, if your client is high-profile
in society\, and if the matter is at all made public\, he or she will be
“on trial by media”\, whether he/she is plaintiff\, defendant\, witnes
s\, or oblique to the formal legal proceedings. Another truth is that the
media – in the Twitter-verse this surely includes “the third estate”
  – can be your best ally\, your worst enemy\, or just another one of the
arrows in your quiver. In no case\, however\, should one lose sight of th
eir client’s best interests\, and here we will discuss how to keep the m
edia in proper perspective vis-à-vis their client engagement.\n\nThis eve
nt is open to all current University of Oxford members. It will take place

DESCRIPTION:Doug Wigdor is a St Cross alumnus and top New York employment
Lawyer. Wigdor has been at the forefront of some of the most widely public
ized sexual harassment and sexual assault cases that have made headline ne

s efficiencies of ADR as opposed to litigation\, that ADR should be a “g
o to” in the interests of clients\; but since then\, legal commentators
scholarly and professional have chipped away at that generalization. While
ADR can have better results for the right client\, choosing the course of
ADR/Litigation/Settlement/Let it Go\, is highly subjective. In this infor

DESCRIPTION:In the salons of Parisian violin dealers of the early nineteen
th century\, a legend formed about a Stradivari violin made in Cremona in
1716: a violin so perfectly preserved\, so exemplary of the best qualities
of the best period\, and so enigmatic in its provenance that it came to b
e known as 'Le Messie'.\n\nFor centuries\, this violin has been scrutinise
d by collectors\, dealers\, violinmakers and copyists as it travelled from
Italy to Paris to Oxford. Rumours immediately emerged that it was an auda
cious fake made as a publicity stunt to boost then-owner Jean-Baptiste Vui
llaume’s reputation as the greatest violin dealer in the world. Conspira
cy theories have followed ever since\, culminating in 1998 when a renowned
conservator formally declared the violin a fake\, despite emphatic insist
ence of its authenticity by experts from the commercial violin trade. \n\
nIn 2017\, St Cross alumnus and Chairman of the British Violin Making Asso
ciation Benjamin Hebbert convened a conference of expert scholars to discu
ss and compare traditional connoisseurly arguments on the craftsmanship of
  the violin with new forensic approaches to determining its authenticity\;
where and when was it made? Who could have made it? More significantly\,
who could not have made it?\n\nIn this special event for St Cross\, Hebber
t will discuss the history of the violin and the nature of connoisseurship
\, then address the extraordinary circumstances in which forensic methodol
ogy and traditional expertise can demonstrably stand shoulder to shoulder.
