DESCRIPTION:Considerable progress has been made in developing effective ps
ychological therapies for common mental health problems but these treatmen
ts were rarely available to the public. The Improving Access to Psychologi
cal Therapies (IAPT) programme aims to overcome this problem by training a
large number of therapists in the latest techniques and deploying them in
new\, specialist services for depression and the anxiety disorders. A uni
que feature of the services is that outcomes are recorded and publicly rep
orted on 99% people who have a course of treatment (currently 640\,000 per
year). The talk covers the background to the establishment of IAPT and th
e way it has used the dataset to progressively improve the quality and eff
ectiveness of the services.\n\nProfessor David M Clark holds the Chair of
Experimental Psychology at University of Oxford and is the National Clinic
al and Informatics Advisor for the IAPT programme and is one of the origin
al architects of the programme. He is well-known for his research on the u
nderstanding and treatment of anxiety disorders\, especially panic disorde
r\, social anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. Recognitio
n of his work includes Lifetime Achievement Awards from the British Psycho
logical Society and the American Psychological Association.\n\nTo join on

DESCRIPTION:Anxiety in social situations is common. While for some people
it is transient\, for others it can be a remarkably consistent problem tha
t holds them back in life. This webinar covers what we know about the proc
esses that maintain social anxiety and shows how they can be targeted in t
reatment.\n\nDavid M Clark will provide the main presentation\, followed b
 y a Q&A session chaired by Cathy Creswell.\n\nAbout the Series:\nWe have c
ome to realise the importance of mental health issues and the impact they
can have on individuals as well as on society at large. But\, can you sepa
rate the facts from the myths? Do you know how to promote your own mental
wellness and help those around you?\n\nAt Oxford\, we have some of the wor
ld’s leading researchers helping us understand the causes of mental cond
itions and develop effective evidence-based treatments. We are bringing th
em together in a new series – Our Mental Wellness – to share their kno
wledge and answer your questions about how we can look after each others
’ mental wellness in our community.\n\nOur Mental Wellness talks will ta

DESCRIPTION:David Clark is one of the principal architects of the NHS Engl
and Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) Programme\, which l
ast year provided NICE-approved talking therapies for over 600\,000 people
with anxiety or depression and achieved outcomes broadly in line with exp
ectation from the clinical trials that underpin NICE guidance. The success
of IAPT has prompted Australia\, Israel\, LA County\, Norway\, and Ontari
o to develop similar mental health services.\n\nSteve Pilling is at the fo
refront of developing clinical guidelines for the National Institute for H
ealth and Care Excellence (NICE) in the field of mental health care. He pl
ayed a leading role in producing many of the NICE guidelines that underpin
the IAPT programme and has also played a crucial role in developing high
quality training courses for IAPT therapists.\n\nThis session will conside
r what we can learn from how psychologists and economists joined forces to
advocate for IAPT\, the policy engagement strategies they employed that l
ed to its implementation - and answer your questions about how NICE incorp
orates clinical practice and health technology into its guidelines.\n\nSup
