DESCRIPTION:Recent years have witnessed the framework of Setter Colonialis
m gaining hegemonic explanatory dominance among attempts to elucidate the
Palestine/Israel trajectory. Scrutiny of many texts in this (newly-awoken)
domain ultimately reveals that a modest number of new insights have been
added to those already published by (anti-Zionist) Arabs and Israelis betw
een 1962 (the foundation of Israel’s Matzpen) and 1974 (the PLO’s adop
tion of its Ten Point Programme). Whereas the pre-1974 Settler Colonial sc
hool was ‘historical’\, the 21st century one appears somewhat ‘ahist
orical’. This draft-verdict grows out of what I view as three lacunas de
tectable equally in these ‘old’ and ‘renewed’ schools spotlighting
the Palestine/Israel case: (i) insufficient attention to comparative anti
-colonialisms\; (ii) obliviousness vis-à-vis the (post-WW1) phenomenon of
ethnonationalism\; and (iii) a puzzling epistemological detour around soc
ial constructivism. In his seminal 1999 essay\, The One State Solution\, E
dward Said advocated for a single binational state. In the aftermath of hi
s 2003 passing two asymmetric schools emerged: (i) a miniature Saidian one
warranting the label ‘bi-national’\; and (ii) a non-Saidian liberal a
nd Eurocentric school which is home to practically all affiliates of ‘Se
ttler Colonial Studies’. These schools make dissimilar sense of the conc
ept ‘de-colonisation’ and of notions of individual and collective righ

DESCRIPTION:The prominence of Mizrahi Jews as perpetrators of violent acts
against Palestinians that have topped the headlines in recent years was t
he starting point of my recent study. The media coverage and public denunc
iation of these incidents are usually accompanied by reference to the atta
ckers’ Mizrahi origins\, frequently invoking controversy among the comme
ntators: Does ‘Mizrahi culture’ generate excessive violence towards Pa
lestinians? Are the Israeli media racist\, denouncing Mizrahi Jews more th
an they do others? Or maybe this violence has to do with class and religio
us perceptions rather than ethnic origin?\nIn this talk I will start with
suggesting a definition to Mizrahi acts\, i.e.\, what makes a certain act
or view (violent or otherwise) to be defined as ‘Mizrahi’\; then move
on to present Mizrahi views and acts regarding the ‘Palestinian Question
’ from the outset of Zionism to present. The changes over time will be d
iscussed in the light of the influence of the Ashkenazi-Zionist hegemony o
ver Mizrahim and Arabs alike\, as well as vis-à-vis Palestinian acts and
ideas regarding ethnic relations within the Yishuv and the Jewish society
in Israel.\n\nSpeakers:\nProfessor Hillel Cohen (Hebrew U)
