DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of timely reflection and intergeneratio
nal dialogue as the Oxford China Forum presents an exclusive event with re
nowned geographer and social commentator Professor Danny Dorling\, introdu
cing his latest book\, The Next Crisis: And How to Survive It.\n\nIn a wor
ld shaped by uncertainty\, Dorling offers a powerful and optimistic argume
nt: our best hope lies in facing crisis head-on. Drawing on decades of res
earch into inequality\, demography\, and global change\, he explores the s
hape of what’s to come—and what we can do to prepare for it.\n\nThe ev
ent features:\n\n- A keynote talk by Professor Danny Dorling on the core a
rguments and insights behind The Next Crisis\n- A dynamic student panel di
 scussion\, where young voices respond to Dorling’s ideas\, fostering a u
nique intergenerational dialogue on the politics of crisis\, hope\, and fu
ture-building\n\nWhether you're interested in social justice\, climate cha
nge\, economic inequality\, or global futures\, this event will offer rich
food for thought and a chance to engage with one of the UK’s most thoug
ht-provoking public intellectuals.\nSpeakers:\nProfessor Danny Dorling (Un

DESCRIPTION:John Furlong\, former Director of the University of Oxford Dep
artment of Education\, discusses his recent memoir 'Islands: In Search of
Brave New Worlds' with Danny Dorling\, Halford Mackinder Professor of Huma
n Geography.\n\nIt’s 1969. John and his friend Mike are living and worki
ng in Manhattan\, making money for their big trip. That summer\, New York
becomes the epicentre of the brave new world that is ‘Alternative Americ
 a’ – drugs\, meditation\, the anti-war movement\, gay liberation\, civ
il rights\, feminism. Although exciting\, John eventually becomes disillus
ioned. He wants to experience somewhere more ‘real’.\n\nIn the Caribbe
an\, he and Mike discover the beauty and simplicity of island life before
the advent of mass tourism. But they also have to confront the reality of
a collapsing British Empire which lays bare the legacy of 400 years of col
onialism and slavery – the poverty and corruption that was always there
but that the Brits refused to see. Then on the tiny island of Carriacou\,
they meet Father Pat\, a charismatic Marxist priest who asks John to join
him in his struggle to create a more just society. But who was Father Pat
and what did John learn from him? Only now\, 50 years on\, does John final
ly discover the priest’s identity and his role in Grenada’s socialist
revolution of 1979 – that country’s ill-fated bid to build its own bra
 ve new world.\nhttps://johnfurlongauthor.co.uk/\n\n\n\nSpeakers:\nProfesso

DESCRIPTION:When it comes to people\, the word potential has come to mean
very different things to different readers. The UN Convention on the Right
s of the Child states that educational establishments should be well funde
d and governments should take all necessary steps to create an environment
where all children can grow and reach their full potential.\n\nA familiar
reaction to such progressive rhetoric is to cast doubt on the idea that m
any children have much potential and to then suggest that just a few need
to be sought out and specially nurtured. This drives growing inequality. I
nequality is created\, maintained and defended by the theory that differen
t people are of greatly different worth\; that their children have hugely
varying potentials\; that inequality is inevitable\; and that all is rough
ly for the best in the best of all possible worlds. However\, more compell
ing evidence suggests that we have the potential to think\, dream and beco
me better than this. But that potential is collective\, not individualisti
c\, and will not be fully realized while we are so diverted by the search
for the ‘golden child’ – the mythical individual with the greatest i
nherent potential of all.\nSpeakers:\nProfessor Danny Dorling (University
