SUMMARY:Cicero on slavery: 2025 Syme Lecture\, Wolfson College - Professor

DESCRIPTION:Cicero\, like other Romans of his class\, owned numerous slave
 s. His attitude to and relationship with his slaves and ex-slaves have com
e under scrutiny in some recent studies. Others have offered important ins
ights into ideas of freedom and slavery in the Roman political sphere more
generally – and in Cicero’s work in particular. This lecture aims to
probe the relationship between Cicero’s experiences as a slaver and the
figure of slavery in his political thinking. Cicero was well aware that th
e power exercised by Rome over its subject territories might be figured as
slavery. In his letters\, Cicero terms his own position vis-à-vis Pompey
\, Caesar and Crassus a kind of enslavement. The figure of slavery is one
he invokes with still greater frequency in coming to terms with Julius Cae
sar’s dictatorship – and\, after the Ides of March\, in attacking Mark
Antony. The power Antony exercised over his fellow Romans was worse than
that of Caesar\, according to Cicero\, for his own character was that of a
slave. The lecture will explore the slippery ways in which Cicero’s ref
lections on the political sphere interact with\, reinforce or challenge th
e brutal realities of literal enslavement.\nSpeakers:\nProfessor Catharine

DESCRIPTION:From the perspective of a life-long academic who became U.S. A
mbassador to Germany\, I offer reflections on my diplomatic experience and
how it illuminates major threats to American democracy and our allies tod
ay. As the only survivor of a generation of German Jews\, I also reflect p
ersonally on how my own family’s trajectory is a story of the destructiv
e weight of autocracy\, the redeeming power of democracy\, and the urgency
of this perilous moment in history. In conclusion\, I offer three broad s
trategies—requiring civic courage\, sooner not later—to reverse the po
tential demise of democracy and to protect the people democracy must serve
to survive.\nSpeakers:\nDr Amy Gutmann (University of Pennsylvania)

DESCRIPTION:People think in linear narratives\, with a beginning followed\
, by a series of causal events\, leading to a conclusion. This is a useful
way to think\, but only if you are able to keep in mind that it is often
not what is actually happening. Many natural science disciplines are focus
sed on understanding dynamic\, multi-scale systems that do not have a begi
nning and middle and an end. Which came first\, the chicken or the egg? Mo
st scientists have to navigate this challenge when writing a paper up for
publication. It is essential to tell a story to bring readers along with t
he data you are presenting and how you are interpreting them. The arc you
present often bears little relation to how you conducted the work\, which
involved twists and turns\, serendipitous discoveries\, and the putting to
gether of two things you had not previously connected. Meanwhile\, everyon
e\, including scientists\, live in a world with dominant stories about who
does science and how science works. Simplifying only slightly\, this ofte
n centres on a lone genius\, using pure logic and brilliant inspiration to
march toward the truth and save the world. All these science stories are
problematic for everyone. They restrict who does science\, and how it inte
racts with society and with wider human endeavours\, at a time when techno
logical advance is proceeding at lightening pace. Changing the science sto
ry has become an urgent priority in successfully capturing the opportuniti
es and addressing the challenges we face\, locally\, nationally and global
ly.\nSpeakers:\nProfessor Dame Ottoline Leyser (UK Research and Innovation

DESCRIPTION:Today\, as scientific and technological innovation is seen as
fundamental to the future development of contemporary societies\, the rela
tionship between science and society requires closer attention than ever b
efore. While science and technology have been seen as instruments of socia
l progress and personal opportunity\, the last decade has been marked by f
riction and conflict over techno-scientific issues that pose serious chall
enges to democratic societies. Whether it is the COVID pandemic\, measures
to combat climate change\, new genetically modified organisms or digitali
sation\, they all point to the development of a new relationship between s
cientific knowledge production and economic and political power. While the
demand for expert knowledge is increasing and science seems to be becomin
g a more prominent societal actor - think of the increasing talk about soc
 ietal impact\, innovation\, ... - scientific knowledge is simultaneously f
acing increasing doubts and contestation and the distance to those who are
supposed to be governed by this knowledge seems to be growing. This prese
ntation will explore the considerations necessary to build and maintain a
sustainable relationship between science and society under these changing
boundary conditions\, while preserving science’s essential capacity to b
e a source of impartial critical authority.\n\nThe Haldane Lecture is give
n by a speaker of international standing in the field of science each Hila
 ry Term. It is named after J. S. and J. B. S. Haldane\, who carried out a
number of pioneering experiments in the house that formerly stood on site
of Wolfson College. Past speakers include Sir Martin Evans\, Professor Dam

essor Kathy Willis and Professor Sir Chris Whitty.\nSpeakers:\nProfessor U
