DESCRIPTION:Refreshments provided from 5.40\n\nThis talk is jointly organi
sed by the NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre and the NIHR Oxford Heal
th Biomedical Research Centre\nDeep brain stimulation (DBS) has become a r
ecognised way of tackling tremors in people with Parkinson’s disease. No
w this technique – delivering an electrical pulse into the brain – is
being explored as a potential treatment for other neurological conditions.
\n\nA new study is looking at whether DBS can help to treat chronic pain i
n people who have suffered a stroke. Central post-stroke pain is a disabli
ng – and currently untreatable – condition which affects areas of the
brain and central nervous system that process pain signals.\n\nIn this pub
lic talk\, Alex Green\, Professor of Neurosurgery\, and Ben Seymour\, Prof
essor of Clinical Neuroscience\, will discuss the EPIONE study\, which is
investigating whether DBS could be used to treat CPSP\, and discuss whethe
r DBS might be a way of tackling other brain-related conditions.\nThe EPIO
NE study (Effective Pain Interventions with Neural Engineering) is support
ed by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Oxford an
d Oxford Health Biomedical Research Centres (BRC)\, who are jointly organi
 sing this talk.\n\nFREE entry\, no booking required.\n\nSpeakers:\nProfess
or Alex Green (University of Oxford)\, Professor Ben Seymour (University o

DESCRIPTION:At this meeting\, Ben will give a basic overview of the proble
m of measuring pain: recapping the basic anatomy of the pain system\, curr
ent ways of measuring pain in clinical contexts\, and thinking about the f
uture.\n\nOxford Pain Network Meetings are fortnightly meetings run by the
Clinical Neurosciences Pain Network (NDCN). Meetings are typically semina
rs or open discussion and take place in a hybrid format over Teams and at
the FMRIB Annexe (Centre for Integrative Neuroimaging\, John Radcliffe Hos
pital). Open to all researchers/students/clinical staff in Oxford interest
ed in pain research. For more details about future events\, please join th
e mailing list: oxin-paingroup-subscribe@maillist.ox.ac.uk or email Daniel
le Hewitt danielle.hewitt@ndcn.ox.ac.uk for further details.\nSpeakers:\nP

DESCRIPTION:Technologies to manage pain ideally require a way to measure t
o the objective behavioural impact of pain in someones daily life\, as a p
roxy for the subjective felt sense of pain (which is the target of treatme
nt in clinical contexts). This is a hard problem\, but insight derives fro
m the fact that ultimately\, pain evolved to serve a core protective and r
ecuperative function. The challenge here is that most of our models of pai
n behaviour come from highly contrived laboratory experimental contexts\,
and this illustrates the need to extend this to more realistic everyday co
ntexts that can provide a basis for clinical application. I will outline h
ow we are now addressing this problem\, both theoretically (e.g. models of
free-operant decision-making) and experimentally (using virtual reality).
