DESCRIPTION:How do we talk about disease—and the stigma that often comes
with it? \n\nJoin us at the History of Science Museum for an open convers
ation exploring how illness and stigma shape our experiences\, perceptions
\, and histories. You'll hear from five thought-provoking speakers who wil
l guide small breakout discussions\, each inspired by intriguing objects\,
some of which are from our collections. \n\nThen we’ll come together as
a group as our speakers share their reflections. You'll have an opportuni
ty to contribute to the conversation and ask questions. Will hearing each
other’s stories shift how we think? \n\nLet's talk about stigma.\nSpeake

DESCRIPTION:Ben Rymer (University of Oxford)\, “Military hospitals in Ne
 w Granada\, 1810-24”\nIn the eighteenth century\, European states took a
n increasing interest in the health of their soldiers in a way that prefig
ured later expansion of state involvement in medicine. In the Spanish Empi
re\, the growth of colonial garrisons over the course of the century led t
o the establishment of state-run military hospitals\, especially in the Ca
ribbean. This paper seeks to analyse the culmination of the development o
f military medicine in in Spanish Empire by investigating military hospita
ls in the Viceroyalty of New Granada during the wars of independence\, dra
wing on archival sources in Spain and Colombia. These wars saw an unpreced
ented military presence in the viceroyalty\, leading to a renewed effort t
o create and perpetuate military hospitals. The effort was supported by th
e hospital orders\, who hoped to rid themselves of the burden of caring fo
r sick soldiers\, and by administrators and doctors who saw a chance to re
invigorate military medicine\, and more broadly improve medical provision
in the viceroyalty. However\, the expense of military medicine brought the
royalist army into conflict with the civilian population\, and contribute
d to its diminishing popularity. Ultimately\, Spain’s loss of Nueva Gran
ada after the battle of Boyacá (1819) undid all its investments\, althoug
h the new Republic of Colombia was able to appropriate some of the new med
ical infrastructure. This paper will shed light on the history of medicine
in South America\, as well as state building\, and the rising militarisat
ion of Spanish American politics and society.\n\nHohee Cho (University of
Oxford)\, “A Multispecies History of Coconuts in the Lever's Pacific Pla
ntations”\nIn the estates of Lever’s Pacific Plantations Limited (LPPL
 ) in the Solomon Islands\, there were foreign bees\, beetles\, goats\, cow
 s\, parasites\, flies\, moths\, birds\, and iguanas. There were also exoti
c grass\, bracken\, clovers\, and alien humans. All of them were there for
coconuts. This talk is a multispecies history of the coconut plantations
owned by LPPL. LPPL owned the biggest coconut plantations in the Solomon I
slands in the first half of the twentieth century. Growing coconut palms i
 n the Pacific\, however\, posed a great challenge: a continuous battle wit
h pests. To solve the problem\, LPPL estates adopted biological control me
asures\, which were popular in the period. This means that while intended
for monoculture\, coconut plantations introduced diverse life forms not na
tive to the land for pest control. By analysing the series of biological c
ontrols adopted by LPPL\, this paper will map an ecological system of coco
nut plantations run by LPPL.\nSpeakers:\nBen Rymer (Oxford)\, Dr Hohee Cho

DESCRIPTION:The World Health Organization’s Western Pacific Region websi
te invites its visitors to: “Imagine having to deliver health services t
o a population dispersed across dozens of atolls and island groups\, cover
ing a distance of up to 5\,000 kilometers\, with slow internet\, extremely
high operational costs as well as infrequent transport links.” One hund
red years ago\, the British colonial authorities faced the same set of pro
blems in the Pacific. This seminar will discuss the initiatives to promote
healthcare in the Pacific Islands in the first half of the twentieth cent
ury\, with a focus on the British Empire. Colonial administrations in the
Pacific Islands connected\, cooperated\, and competed with one another thr
ough an overarching scheme that centralised medical institutions. It was a
  process that\, at various times\, involved quarantine\, education\, disea
se-control\, military medicine\, and public health. Together\, the central
ised medical institutions inaugurated an imperial healthcare system in whi
ch constituents of the British Empire engaged in both hierarchical and lat
eral relationships. The history of the development of healthcare in the Pa
cific Islands is\, therefore\, a remarkable example of intercolonial\, int
erimperial\, and intraimperial relations. \nSpeakers:\nDr Hohee Cho (Ox
