DESCRIPTION:Selection to higher education typically includes the use of in
formation about students’ attainment\, or predicted attainment\, in scho
ol-leaving examinations such as A-levels .For selective universities and c
ompetitive undergraduate degree courses this information provides insuffic
ient scope for discriminating between candidates\, furthermore candidates
are applying increasingly with qualifications from different international
educational settings. To help provide a common point of reference across
all candidates for a particular course\, tests have been introduced as par
t of the admissions process in many courses at the University of Oxford. T
his project first explored the relationships between student characteristi
cs and test performance with Oxford University admissions data before turn
ing to study the effects of test preparation on TSA and BMAT for students
applying to Oxford. How students prepare for admissions tests and whether
this preparation has an impact on their performance in the test is an unde
r-researched area.\n\nThis seminar is number one in a five-part public sem
inar series on ‘Student Access to University’\, led by the Department
of Education and convened by Jo-Anne Baird (Director\, Department of Educa
tion) and Simon Marginson (Professor of Higher Education\, Department of E
ducation). The series forms part of the department’s 100th Anniversary c
elebrations\, marking 100 years of leading research in education. The ser
ies will be held at venues across the University and aims to encourage pub
lic discussion and move access forward by bringing a research-based treatm
 ent to it.\n\nRegistration is required.\n\nSEMINAR SPEAKERS\nThis seminar
will be chaired by Rebecca Surender (Pro Vice-Chancellor – Equality and
Diversity\, University of Oxford). The speakers will include\, Jo-Anne Bai
rd (Director of the Department of Education)\, Samina Khan (Director of Un

. A response to the seminar will be given by Karen O’Brien (Head of the

DESCRIPTION:The Mathematical\, Physical and Life Sciences Division and the
Medical Sciences Division of the University of Oxford welcome you to the
Dasturzada Dr Jal Pavry Memorial Lectures. We present these lectures and t
he panel presentation to engage our academic communities and the general p
ublic in scientific and medical topics of interest and importance. Through
the lectures\, we hope that you learn more about the innovative research
currently being conducted by leading scientists. The panel discussion offe
rs you the opportunity to ask the questions that matter to you. You are we
lcome to join in the discussion on how to pursue and maintain a career in
science and medicine\, and hear how our panellists were able to successful
ly do it. Lastly\, during the afternoon tea/coffee and evening reception\,
we hope that you take the opportunity to meet new people and network with
colleagues.\n\nAll are welcome – the event is open to the public. You
’re welcome to attend any or all of the event sessions.\n\n1.30-2.30pm (
Room: L5)\nLecture - The biology of appetite: what makes us hungry?\nProfe
ssor Sadaf Farooqi\, University of Cambridge\nEvery day we make choices ab
out the type of food we eat\, when we eat and how much we eat. There is in
creasing evidence that an intricate biological system underpins our eating
behaviour. I will discuss key research into the biology of appetite emerg
ing from genetics and neuroscience and the relevance of these findings to
understanding eating disorders and obesity.\n\n2.30-3.30pm (Room: L5)\nPan
el discussion - Race Equality in STEMM\nModerated by: Professor Rebecca Su
render\, University Advocate and Pro-Vice Chancellor for Equality and Dive
rsity\, University of Oxford\nPanellists: Professor Chas Bountra\, Univers
ity of Oxford\; Professor Sadaf Farooqi\, University of Cambridge\; Profes
sor Francis Su\, Harvey Mudd College\; Professor Niranjan Thatte\, Univers
ity of Oxford\nHear about panellists' experiences in academia and their ad
vice for others pursuing a career in STEMM\, and join in a discussion abou
t race equality initiatives and activities in higher education.\n\n3.30-4.
 00pm (located outside room L5) \nNetworking tea and coffee\n\n4.00-5.00pm
(Room: L1) \nLecture - Fair decisions: applying topology and combinatorics
to social science problems\nProfessor Francis Su\, Harvey Mudd College\nS
perner's lemma is an elementary combinatorial result with a topological fl
avor\, and it has many interesting applications\, including the classical
cake-cutting problem: how to divide an object fairly among n people. I wil
l trace the history of some generalizations of Sperner's lemma\, including
some recent applications to divide rent fairly among roommates. I promise
the talk will be fun and accessible to non-mathematicians while remaining
interesting to mathematicians.\n\n5.00-6.00pm (Common Room on first floor
 ) \nEvening reception \n\n\n\nSpeakers:\nProfessor Sadaf Farooqi PhD\, FRC

DESCRIPTION:How are women remembered\, commemorated and celebrated in publ
ic? How is this different from historical commemorations of men? What form
s do these commemorations take? Why do public commemorations of women prov
oke such debate\, and what are the legacies of these public memorials?\n\n
Our cities\, towns and streets are rich with memorials and monuments dedic
ated to the achievements and lives of men\, but women are significantly un
represented in our public acts of commemoration. \n\nAt this special panel
discussion\, feminist activists and scholars will examine this significan

history and memory.\n\nWith: \nCaroline Criado Perez\, activist and campa
