DESCRIPTION:Schizophrenia is a leading cause of global disability\, affect
ing approximately 1% of the population. Multiple lines of evidence suggest
that there are alterations in the glutamate system and the glutamate rece
ptor\, N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)\, in individuals with schizophrenia. Po
st-mortem investigations reveal changes in NMDA receptors across different
brain regions. More recently\, studies utilising Positron Emission Tomogr
aphy (PET) imaging have identified lower NMDA receptor levels in the hippo
campus relative to other brain regions in people with schizophrenia compar
ed to healthy individuals. \nStudies using proton magnetic resonance spect
roscopy (1H-MRS) have enabled the in vivo examination of glutamate and its
metabolic\, glutamine. They have found region-specific alterations in peo
ple with schizophrenia. This talk will explore the latest findings from th
ese studies and the implications for drug development. This will include t
he review of glycine type 1 transporter inhibitors and drugs targeting bra
in glutamate such as riluzole as potential treatments for schizophrenia. \
nThis talk will also critically review the success and setbacks in drug di
scovery for these targets\, discussing the underlying reasons. \nAdditiona
lly\, the potential utility of neuroimaging in guiding future drug develop
ment in this area will be explored. \n\nThis seminar is hosted in person a
