DESCRIPTION:A growing body of empirical research and investigative journal
ism has identified serious harms occasioned by partially- and fully-automa
ted (i.e.\, algorithmic) decision-making systems\, especially in work envi
ronments and government decision-making. A wide range of proposals have be
en advanced to mitigate these harms\, including better enforcement of exis
ting laws\, new laws\, new technical standards\, and supranational governa
nce regimes. This talk will briefly review existing governance frameworks
around the manufacture and operation of other technologies and engineering
fields that might offer lessons for the policy task of governing the deve
lopment and operation of algorithmic decision-making systems. It will also
present some possible strategies through which increased professionalisat
ion of software engineering and administration could contribute to this ta
sk. The talk will present very preliminary research and ample time will be
reserved for discussion. The insights and suggestions of seminar particip
ants will be greatly welcomed.\nSpeakers:\nSix Silberman (University of Ox
 ford)

DESCRIPTION:The child’s right to play has historically been overlooked i
n favour of other children’s rights. Yet\, children’s rights are inter
related and interdependent. This symposium looks to investigate the relati
onship between the right to play and the Convention on the Rights of the C
hild as a whole. It will explore how implementation of the right to play a
ssists in the implementation of other convention rights\, and vice versa.
This symposium is the first of its kind\, applying the right to play to th
e broader children’s rights framework and reflecting on the impact this
may have for advocacy\, implementation and realisation of the right to pla
 y. The symposium includes contributions from academics\, non-governmental
organisations\, advocates\, and policy experts from across the globe\, inc
luding the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. Contributions will pro
vide recommendations for policy and practice\, as well as critical academi
c debate. The event will foster relationships for future collaboration and
impact.\nSpeakers:\nDr Naomi Lott (University of Oxford)\, Jonathon Sarge
