SUMMARY:Developing a screening tool for common perinatal mental health con

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nIn South Africa\, perinatal depression\, anxiety
and suicidality are highly prevalent. Screening may provide a crucial entr
y point to care and may mitigate the substantial treatment gap for perinat
al women. Commonly used screening tools from the Global North\, while vali
dated in South Africa\, do not perform well in service settings. The Perin
atal Mental Health Project developed an ultra-brief screening tool through
psychometric validation and cognitive testing. This tool has been integra
ted into guidelines and standard procedures in maternity care across the c
ountry. However\, uptake of screening by maternity staff has been low. Sim
one will describe the screening tool development process and discuss some
of the systems components that are required for implementation of maternal
mental health screening to be successful.\nSpeakers:\nProfessor Simone Ho
 nikman (University of Cape Town)

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nThe founding director will describe PMHP’s jour
ney working with perinatal women who experience common mental health condi
tions in South Africa and other low and middle income countries– and how
the project has worked to strengthen the systems that impact these women.
She will highlight the challenges faced and key lessons learned over two
decades.\n\nAttendees will gain an understanding of the PMHP's efforts to
embed comprehensive mental health support within maternity care at healthc
are facilities and within community organisations. The discussion will cov
er the project’s experience with detection\, community engagement\, the
translation of policy to practice\, and provider capacity building\, inclu
ding their approach to addressing the problem of obstetric violence.\n\nTh
e PMHP's service model will be described and recent research findings will
be presented. Discussion will relate to maternal mental health matters wi
thin a broader global context. This session will encourage a pragmatic con
sideration of strategies that address perinatal mental health concerns in
resource constrained settings.\nSpeakers:\nProfessor Simone Honikman (Univ
