DESCRIPTION:Studying science at Oxford was not just a matter for the colle
 ges and the University\, which set the formal curriculum and degree requir
 ements. It was the students themselves who took an active interest in impr
 oving their learning and establishing a 'hidden curriculum'. They organise
 d their own seminars\, discussed scientific exhibits\, were sometimes the 
 first in Oxford to reproduce new effects (such as Hertzian waves)\, and ev
 en gave popular lectures on the latest scientific findings in the Universi
 ty Museum\, which attracted large numbers of Oxfordians from all walks of 
 life.\n\nTwo student-run societies\, the Junior Scientific Club of 1882 an
 d the Alembic Club of 1900\, stood out among a plethora of other scientifi
 c clubs and societies. They became the social machinery that enabled stude
 nts such as Henry Moseley\, Frederick Soddy and Julian Huxley to launch th
 eir scientific careers by involving Oxford professors\, pressing them for 
 laboratory access and inviting luminaries of British and international sci
 ence. Their Robert Boyle Lecturers included Nobel Laureates such as Ruther
 ford\, WH Bragg and FW Aston\, and Conversaziones became early examples of
  science popularisation by Oxford students.\n\nHow unique was the Oxford e
 xample? How did it compare with Cambridge\, which had its own but rather e
 xclusive Natural Science Club? And can we link the British case to the ubi
 quitous German student scientific societies or the US scientific fraternit
 ies (which were at the beginning of the development of Greek-letter honora

DESCRIPTION:For centuries laboratory apparatus was adapted into teaching g
 ear\, and both museum and school collections were stuffed with long series
  of scientific instruments in the hope that the study of the best specimen
 s would enlighten the visitor’s scientific understanding until things ch
 anged radically in the 1950s. Curriculum reform projects produced new teac
 hing material and media\, including demonstration sets\, whilst science ex
 hibits were transformed from displaying phenomenal machines to set-ups tha
 t allowed the experience of phenomena\, as seen in the science centres whi
 ch emerged in the 1960s. Looking at a number of examples from North Americ
 a\, Germany and Britain which were explicitly designed in the 1960s and 19
 70s for both formal and informal science education in schools and science 
 centres\, I will discuss the extent to which the material culture of post-
 war teaching devices – or edufacts – meant a break from the long histo
 ry of scientific instruments\, demonstrations and models that had been har
