DESCRIPTION:All good things must come to an end. The MEGA finale this Thur
sday will explore industry\, a sector responsible for about a quarter of g
lobal emissions\, and regarded as hard-to-decarbonise because of its energ
y intensity. This week’s speakers are both working to decarbonise indust
ry. \n\nRichard Jackson is Director of Standard Gas\, who are converting n
on-recyclable waste into gas and biochar\, which can provide carbon-effici
ent inputs to manufacturing\, agriculture and construction. Professor Yulo
ng Ding is the Founder of PeroCycle\, a spin-out from Birmingham Universit
y\, who are eliminating CO2 emissions from steel-making. Yulong is a proli
fic inventor with over 100 patents and recognised with many awards includi
ng Royal Academy Fellowship. The Q&A will be led by Professor Cameron Hepb
urn\, one of Oxford’s most prominent environmental economists\, and foun
der of three green finance companies. So join us this Thursday at 5:30pm t
o make our series finale the most mega MEGA - it’s now or never. There w
ill be a Bacchanalia of organic wine\, with the official MEGA Afterparty f
 ollowing the talk until 7:30pm.\n\n~Alistair & Eamon\nSpeakers:\nProfessor

DESCRIPTION:When the Covid-19 pandemic emerged\, most of sub‑Saharan Afr
ica went into lockdown. What happens next for the pandemic across Africa r
emains uncertain\, but the combination of domestic lockdowns and the spill
-over from the global recession means immediate and severe economic hardsh
ip.\n\nIn this talk\, Professor Chris Adam\, Professor of Development Econ
omics & Oxford Martin Fellow on the Oxford Martin Programme on African Gov
ernance\, looks beyond the public health aspects of the pandemic to examin
e the medium-term macroeconomic adjustment challenge confronting domestic
policy-makers and international donors.\n\nHe will discuss epidemiological
and macroeconomic models to calibrate the scale of the combined shock to
a representative low-income African economy and to show how alternative po
licy options for slowing transmission of Covid-19 impact on public revenue
\, and on GDP in the short run\, and hence shape the path to recovery. Not
ing that the first lockdown\, however costly\, does not by itself eliminat
e the likelihood of a re-emergence of the epidemic\, he will then lay out
the agenda for key macroeconomic and public finance policies to sustain re
 covery\, growth\, and poverty reduction in sub-Saharan Africa.\n\nThis tal
k is in partnership with The Smith School of Enterprise and the Environmen
t at the University of Oxford and the Oxford Review of Economic Policy.\n\

DESCRIPTION:Policy for a net zero UK\nABSTRACT: Analysis suggests that if
the aspirations in the Paris agreement are to be met\, the UK should reach
net zero greenhouse gas emissions between 2045 and 2070. Meeting such a g
oal would have significant implications for the energy sector across 5 pol
icy areas: \n\n1.	Technology: larger portfolio of early stage technologica
 l “bets”\n2.	Infrastructure: investment fit for a net zero world\n3.	E
conomics: incentives in various guises (especially carbon pricing)\n4.	Fin
ance: regulation to manage risks of stranded assets\n5.	Carbon removal: Su
pport for CDR / CCUS and potential legal intervention\nThus far\, we are n
ot on track. This talk assesses priorities to get back on track\, includin
g policies to accelerate electricity decarbonisation\, planning ahead for
buildings and transport to avoid later regret\, getting started on carbon
dioxide utilisation and removal.\n\nCameron Hepburn is the Director of the
Economics of Sustainability Programme\, based at the Institute for New Ec
onomic Thinking at the Oxford Martin School. He is also Professor of Envir
onmental Economics at the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment\,
a Fellow at New College\, Oxford\, and a Professorial Research Fellow at
the Grantham Research Institute at the London School of Economics.\n\nHe h
as published widely on energy\, resources and environmental challenges acr
oss a range of disciplines and provides advice on energy and climate polic
y to government ministers (e.g. China\, India\, UK and Australia) and inte
rnational institutions (e.g. OECD\, UN organisations) around the world. Ca
meron began his professional life with McKinsey\, and has since had an ent
 repreneurial career\, co-founding three successful businesses – Aurora E
nergy Research\, Climate Bridge and Vivid Economics – and investing in s
everal other social enterprises\, such as Purpose and Apolitical. He also
serves as a trustee for Schola Cantorum of Oxford. \n\nhttps://www.oxfordm

DESCRIPTION:Addressing global development challenges requires valuing and
managing water effectively. Achieving universal\, safely managed water and
sanitation by 2030 is projected to require capital expenditures of USD 11
4 billion per year. Investment on this scale\, along with the accompanying
policy reforms to achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
\, can be motivated by a growing appreciation of the value of water.\n\nTh
e OECD Roundtable on Financing Water\, UN/World Bank High Level Panel on W
ater\, and initiatives across the developing world create a global opportu
nity to rethink how we value water and to take stock of rapidly changing m
odels and approaches for financing and allocation.\n\n**Join us in Oxford\
, on 7 November\, for a one-day forum to advance new approaches to water v
aluation\, finance and allocation. This forum will convene enterprise\, de
velopment and government partners to advance action and learning from glob
al experiences.**\n\n**Objectives**\n\n* Frame the opportunities for valui
ng water to address global development challenges\;\n* Understand the driv
ers\, barriers and opportunities for new financial models and allocation s
ystems\;\n* Learn from field experiences with new models of infrastructure
finance and water allocation reform\; and\n* Establish priorities and str
engthen partnerships to develop\, test and scale up new and existing appro
