DESCRIPTION:This webinar is part of the Management in Medicine Programme.\
n\nIs there enough money? Are we using resources well? Are we able to help
those who most need it? How can we secure funds for improvement? Health a
nd care professionals face these difficult questions on a daily basis. The
y know that the answers can have a direct impact on health outcomes\, the
experience of care for patients and staff\, and ensuring that limited fund
s are stretched as far as possible. Can economics help to answer some of t
hese questions?\n\nDuring this seminar\, Jacque explores the economic para
digm of the NHS\, and how economics can help grow value through cycles of
improvement. The workshop is organised in two parts:\n\nPart A: The econom
ics of the system\n\nWho pays for what and how does the money flow?\nWho p
lays what role and what influences them\n\nPart B: Using the economic lens
to drive value over time\n\nWhat role does economics play in improvement
cycles?\nHow can economics help health and care professionals accelerate v
alue?\nAbout the speaker:\n\nJacque Mallender is a respected international
health and public policy economist and health evaluation practitioner. Ov
er the last 35 years\, Jacque has worked across health and social care wit

include transforming access to care for patient populations\, integration
of technology into health care work flows\, redefining health care workfl
ows\, and reimagining the needs and preferences of patients for their care
. Specific lessons for health care managers will be identified and discuss
ed. In addition\, the seminar will also speculate on what the embrace of h
ealth care innovation means individually for enhancing managerial competen
cies and personal development moving forward.\n\nTimothy Hoff\, Ph.D. is P

DESCRIPTION:This webinar is part of the Management in Medicine Programme.\
n\nWe all have to make many decisions at work\, in research and in our pri
vate lives. Typically we encounter a choice\, we analyse our options\, we
make a choice then we live with it. This session explores the powerful bia
ses\, illogical wishful and overconfident thinking that characterises many
of our decisions. This session will try to be as interactive as possible
given the constraints of online and aim to convince you to consider a diff
erent process of making decisions. It won’t solve all your problems! …
but you might hopefully end up making better decisions.\nSpeakers:\nProfe

DESCRIPTION:The National Health Service (NHS) of the UK is a totemic insti
tution – much loved by the British public\, and a model for elsewhere. B
ut it faces fundamental challenges. Can it keep up with changes in medicin
e? Can it adapt to changing expectations of the public and of its own staf
f? And most fundamentally\, can we afford to keep it?\n\nIn this seminar\,
we will look at how the NHS came into being\, how it was originally manag
ed and operated and the series of significant structural and policy change
s that have shaped the modern NHS. We will compare this with other systems
emerging elsewhere\, especially in Europe\, and ask what we can learn fro
m them. And we will explore the central challenges the NHS faces for the f
uture\; can we keep the NHS for the next 70 years\, too?\n\nCertificates o

an online feedback form made available shortly after the event.\n\n*Progr

DESCRIPTION:This workshop will explore the links between leadership\, impr
ovement and culture within a healthcare context\, and the opportunities an
d challenges associated with this kind of change. Is it a necessary\, rea
listic and feasible? And what is the role of change agents and leaders in
bringing it about?\n\nJohn Drew will share a model from Reinventing Organ
izations\, by Frederic Laloux\, which describes how organisations are chan
ging or evolving over time\, and make the case for a fundamental rethink o
f our core assumptions rather than just tinkering with structures and proc
esses. He will then describe some of the challenges of applying this think
ing in the NHS environment\, drawing on his current experiences as well as
an approach and set of tools developed by the NHS Leadership Academy to c
hange Leadership and Culture in NHS providers.\n\nWe will then work togeth
er in groups to apply some of these tools and approaches to actual situati
ons to make it practical\, sharing our findings and ideas before the close
.\n\nThe workshop\, which will be highly interactive\, will start with sig
n in and tea and coffee from 09:00 to 09:30 and end with lunch at 13:00.\n
\nProgramme:\n\n09:00 Tea / coffee and sign in\n\n09:30 Reinventing Orga
nisations: understanding and challenging our own assumptions and paradigms
about organisations\n\n10:00 Applying these principles within the NHS: D
o we want to? Why (not)? Is it possible? If so\, what will it take?\n\n1
 0:45 Break for tea/coffee\n\n11:00 Linking Leadership\, Improvement & Cu
lture: understanding how leadership creates the conditions for improvement
and shapes culture\, and how to measure these changes.\n\n11:30 Making i
t practical:\n\nWhat do leaders need to do to create the kind of culture w
e want and need to ‘deliver compassionate excellence’?\n\nWhat does an
improvement methodology look like and how do we apply it to real-world pr
oblems?\n\nWhat else can we do to encourage and cultivate a healthy\, open
culture which is conducive to excellent patient care and staff experience
\n\n12:30 Feedback discussion\n\n13:00 Workshop close followed by lunch\
n\nCertificates of attendance will be provided for those that want one on
completion of an online feedback form made available a week after the work

DESCRIPTION:Almost all healthcare interventions involve groups of people w

\n\nDesigned for present and past medical students\, doctors in training a

involve small group discussions and exercises.\n\nThe workshop will be led
