DESCRIPTION:The Older Scots Reading Group is for people interested in lite
rature produced in Scotland between 1375-1550. This is an incredibly rich
period\, featuring authors experimenting with form and language. The texts
themselves are written in Older Scots – a language closely related to M
iddle English\, but with some unique attributes. This reading group will p
rovide a relaxed introduction to this period and language. This term we wi
ll focus on reading and comprehension. We will read one fairly short poem
(300 lines max) per week by some of the most prominent Scottish Makars –
Robert Henryson\, William Dunbar\, and Gavin Douglas. No intensive prepar
ation required. Both undergraduates and postgraduates are welcome. There m
ay be snacks! If you have any questions\, contact megan.bushnell@ling-phil
