DESCRIPTION:Our work studies the interplay of biomolecules – proteins\,
 sugars\, lipids and their modifications.\nSynthetic Biology’s developmen
t at the start of this century may be compared with Synthetic\nOrganic Che
mistry’s expansion at the start of the last\; after decades of isolation
\, identification\,\nanalysis and functional confirmation\, the future log
ical and free-ranging redesign of biomacromolecules\noffers tantalizing op
portunities to dissect mechanism and control function in physiology\nand b
iology.\nThis lecture will cover past and emerging areas in our group in t
he manipulation of biomolecules\nwith an emphasis on new bond-forming and
bond-breaking processes compatible with biology\nand using those to unders
tand molecular mechanisms.\n:\n(i) New methods: the development of precise
methods that may be applied to biology at a posttranslational\nlevel\, ge
nerating minimal ‘scars’ or ‘traces’ (ideally ‘trace’-less)\,
could allow broad\ncontrol of function. This will allow applications beyon
d simple ‘labeling biology’ or retrieval biology’.\nThe development
of chemo- and regio-selective methods with potential to posttranslationall
y\n‘edit’ biology in this way\, applied under benign conditions to red
esign and reprogramme\nthe structure and function of biomolecules\, will b
e presented.\n(ii) ‘Synthetic Biologics’ and their applications: biomi
 micry\; functional recapitulation\; effector\n[drug/agrochemical/gene/radi
 o-dose] delivery\; selective protein degradation\; inhibitors of pathogen\
 ninteractions\; non-invasive presymptopmatic disease diagnosis\; probes an
d modulators of in\nvitro and in vivo function illustrate possible resulti
ng technologies.\nSpeakers:\nProf Ben Davis (Rosalind Franklin Institute)
