DESCRIPTION:_Kratos_ and _dunamis_ appear as “power” in Plato’s dial
ogs but they signify differently. Kratos is a practice of mastery\, accord
ing to which “might makes right.” Dunamis is the individual and collec
tive capacity to do or not to do\, a capacity that makes exercises of powe
r of any kind possible. This lecture explores in _Gorgias_ and other dialo
gs the ethical and political implications of the dialogs’ representation
s of kratos in terms of dunamis\, including for democracy as _demokratia_.
