DESCRIPTION:REACH (www.reachwater.uk) was a long term\, interdisciplinary
research programme that delivered improved water security for over 10 mill
ion people in Africa and Asia. In 2024\, it won the Vice Chancellor’s Aw
ard for Research Engagement. A defining feature of REACH was its strong co
mmitment to developing early career researchers\, embedding them in long-t
erm research observatories\, applied policy engagement\, and research-info
rmed approaches to water risk and resilience. \n\nThis lecture is the fir
st in an annual series that will continue to share the latest on water sec
urity in research and practice. This year\, we will hear from three REACH
programme alumni who will share their work on water security in Ethiopia a
nd Kenya\, and reflect on research impact pathways in water security. \n\n
Speakers \n \nDr. Florence Tanui is a hydrogeologist and Programme Offic
er (Science) at UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa in Nairobi. Si
nce February 2024\, she has led the management\, coordination\, and implem
entation of UNESCO’s groundwater-security initiatives across Eastern Afr
ica and the Horn of Africa. Her work focuses on climate-resilient groundwa
ter development\, groundwater governance\, and transboundary water coopera
tion\, supporting countries to strengthen groundwater assessment\, monitor
ing\, data use\, and the integration of groundwater into policy and planni
ng. She also drives strategic partnerships and institutional collaboration
with government counterparts\, regional bodies\, universities\, and devel
opment partners to scale evidence-based solutions. Under the REACH program
me\, her work examined groundwater resources and management in Turkana Cou
nty and Kitui County\, Kenya.\n\nDr. Engdasew Feleke is currently servin
g as a Gender Specialist for the BRIGHT project at the Water and Land Reso
urce Center (WLRC)\, supporting resilient and inclusive Integrated Water R
 esource Management (IWRM) across Ethiopia’s Abbay\, Awash\, Omo-Gibe\, R
ift Valley Lakes\, and Tekeze basins. Her work focuses on mainstreaming ge
nder equality and social inclusion to ensure equitable participation and b
enefits in climate-resilient water governance. Previously\, she worked wit
h the REACH–WISER programme\, leading qualitative social science researc
h on water security inequalities in the Awash River Basin.\n\nDennis Ochie
ng Onyango Ong'ech was Observatory Coordinator for the REACH programme in
Kenya and has gone on to co-lead research in the Climate Forecasting\, Ada
ptation\, and Legitimacy (ClimateForAL) project which aims to identify the
optimal way to communicate climate information in Turkana\, drawing on th
e preferences of end-users and the insights of traditional forecasters. Cu
rrently studying for a PhD at the University of Nairobi\, Dennis holds an
MSc. in International Development (Conflict\, Security and Development) fr
om Birmingham University (UK).\nSpeakers:\nDr Florence Tanui (UNESCO Regio
nal Office for Eastern Africa)\, Dr Engdasew Feleke (Water\, Land and Reso
urces Centre\, Ethiopia)\, Dennis Ochieng Onyango Ong'ech (University of N
