DESCRIPTION:This book proposes a political history of Muslim universities
in post-independence India\, from 1947 to the 1990s. Based on a wide range
of sources in English and in Urdu\, it highlights the central role that t
hese educational institutions played in the debates on national integratio
n\, secularism\, minority rights and Muslim backwardness. After independen
ce\, Muslim universities found themselves at a critical juncture between c
entral state authorities and India's Muslim population. As public and Musl
im institutions\, they were to participate in nation-building as much as i
n the development of the Muslim 'community'. By closely looking at the rel
ation between these institutions and state authorities\, the book teases o
ut the ambiguities of the state's Muslim policy. It also examines\, in tur
n\, how university members responded to this policy and developed competin
g conceptions of Muslim identity and citizenship\, which structured the wi
der public debates on Muslims' status in post-partition India.\nLaurence G
autier is a researcher in "Documenting Democracy: History\, Politics\, Cit
izenship" at the Centre de Sciences Humaines\, New Delhi. She completed he
r PhD in History at the University of Cambridge and taught for four years
at O.P. Jindal Global University\, near Delhi. She writes on Muslim politi
 cs\, secularism\, nation-building and university politics in post-independ
ence India. Between Nation and Community is her first monograph. She also
co-edited Historicizing Sayyid-ness: Social Status and Muslim Identity in
