DESCRIPTION:*_Marking 50 years since Hannah Arendt's passing._*\n\nChristo
pher Hayes is Official Fellow and Tutor in English\, Fellow for Libraries
and Keeper of the Archives\, St John’s College\, University of Oxford. H
is first two books focused on modern fiction\, and considered questions ab
out literary value in contrasting ways. The first\, _J.M. Coetzee and the
Novel_ (2010)\, explored how literature can acquire public moral and polit
ical significance\, and the second\, _Philip Roth: Fiction and Power_ (201
4)\, asks how\, and to what ends\, literature can help us escape the unill
uminating and entrapping forms of moral language which command such power
in the modern world. His recent work is _Beyond the Ancient Quarrel_ (2018
)—a collection of essays by a range of contemporary philosophers and lit
erary critics\, which borrows its title from the claim Socrates makes in t
he Republic that ‘there is an ancient quarrel between poetry and philoso
phy’. His other recent project is _The Oxford History of Life-Writing: P
ostwar to Contemporary_ (2022).\n\nRSVP for buffet: "$":mailto:info@oxford
