DESCRIPTION:Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) data are sourced fr
om a UK-wide network of over 2\,000 primary care practices and include 60
million patients of which 16 million are currently registered active patie
nts\, with at least 20 years of follow-up for 25% of the patients. The ano
nymised patient data is broadly representative of the UK general populatio
n in terms of age\, sex and ethnicity\, and offers a rich source of health
data for research. It covers patient records such as symptoms\, diagnoses
 \, clinical measures\, test results\, immunisations\, prescriptions and re
ferrals to secondary care. The primary care data can be linked to secondary
care and other health and area-based datasets\, such as the death registr
ation data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS)\, Hospital Episod
es Statistics (HES) data from NHS Digital and cancer registration data fro
m NHS Digital National Disease Registration Service (NDRS).\n\nThe session
will provide a brief overview of the wealth of data available for researc
hers\, discuss the strengths and limitations of the data\, describe the pr
ocess of submitting a research protocol and obtaining data access\, and ex
plain how the NDPH CPRD Team can work with researchers on potential studie
 s.\n\nTopics to be covered:\nPrimary care data\nLinked data\nResearch prot
 ocol submission and approval\nData access\n\nIntended Audience\nStaff and
students who are interested in using patient electronic health records fro
m GP practices for research into disease epidemiology\, methodological and

 gy.\n\nObjectives\nUnderstand the coverage\, strengths\, limitations and d
ata quality issues of the two separate primary care databases\nUnderstand
the coding system used in CPRD data\nUnderstand CPRD’s Research Data Gov
