DESCRIPTION:Queer adaptations of Greek tragedy by modern Greek poets\, dir
ectors\, and dramatists reengage the tragic canon not by preserving its st
abilized\, “straight” forms but by bending it toward modes of denial\,
dissidence\, and transformation. These works do not simply “make traged
y queer\,” but reveal how adaptation itself already works queerly: turni
ng\, unsettling\, repeating\, and refusing stable hierarchies and (nationa
lizing) expectations.\n\nTaken together\, queer adaptations in Greece rean
imate tragedy as more than a static relic: they transform it into a living
archive of queer endurance\, anchored to genealogies of loss yet continua
lly oriented toward rituals of hope and collective futurity. As acts of di
ssidence\, they challenge normative cultural frameworks and unsettle the p
resumed stability of identity\, tradition\, and inheritance. In this reima
gining\, queering emerges not only as a mode of adaptation but also as a f
orm of political intervention—remaking representation\, recalibrating su
bjectivity\, and reclaiming the tragic stage as a space of resistance and
possibility.\nGiorgos Sampatakakis is Associate Professor of Drama and Per
formance at the Department of Theatre Studies\, University of Patras. His
areas of interest include the history and theory of theatre\, the theory o
f theatre directing and critical reviewing\, and the reception of Greek tr
 agedy.\nSpeakers:\nGiorgos Sampatakakis
