DESCRIPTION:Computers have long been useful for studying mathematical prob
lems. But recently computer techniques have been used to prove new theorem
s in geometry\, specifically related to the study of gravity through Einst
ein's theory of General Relativity. This talk will describe these developm
ents and what they might mean for the future.\n\nJason Lotay is Professor
of Mathematics in the Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford\,
and one of the inaugural Fellows of the Academy of Mathematical Sciences.
\n\nPlease email external-relations@maths.ox.ac.uk to register to attend i
n person.\n\nThe lecture will be broadcast on the Oxford Mathematics YouTu
be Channel on Wednesday 25 March at 5-6 pm and any time after (no need to
register for the online version).\n\nThe Oxford Mathematics Public Lectur
es are generously supported by XTX Markets.\nSpeakers:\nJason Lotay (Unive
 rsity of Oxford)
