DESCRIPTION:Join award-winning Polish reportage writer and journalist Mari
usz Szczygieł in conversation with his translator Antonia Lloyd-Jones and
publisher Linden Editions about his work\, Not There. \n \nNot There is a
collection of literary reportage about loss\, absence and memories from o
ne of Poland’s most celebrated writers. Szczygieł follows a Czech poet\
, a Ukrainian soldier\, a Polish accountant\, an Albanian poet and an Isra
eli writer as they account for their losses and gains\; tracing lost conve
rsations\, cheese forks\, poems\, houses and lives. It is beautiful\, prof
ound and quietly uplifting. His work may be an inventory of losses\, but
‘its pages are alive with the traces of what is not there: it is a medit
ation on absence that hums with the quiet pulse of what remains’ (Frank
Wynne\, Irish Times). \n \nMariusz Szczygieł is one of Europe’s most ce
lebrated journalists. A reporter for Gazeta Wyborcza\, he is the author of
a number of books of reportage about the Czech Republic and Poland. His b
ooks have been published in twenty-one countries and have been awarded the
Europe Book Prize and the Prix Amphi\, among other honours. From 1995–2
001\, he hosted a popular talk show on Polish television. Szczygieł runs
the Institute of Reportage in Warsaw\, a creative writing reportage school
\, and Dowody na Isnienie\, an independent publishing house. Not There won
the Nike Award and Nike Readers' Award in Poland on publication in 2019.\
 n \nAntonia Lloyd-Jones translates fiction\, non-fiction\, poetry and chil
dren’s books from Polish. Her translation of Drive Your Plow Over the Bo
nes of the Dead by 2018 Nobel Prize laureate Olga Tokarczuk was shortliste
d for the 2019 Man Booker International prize. For ten years she was a men
tor for the Emerging Translators’ Mentorship Programme\, and is a former
co-chair of the UK Translators Association.\n \nLinden Editions is an ind

on-fiction and essays from Europe\, the Francophonie\, and the Mediterrane
an region. It was established by Tasja Dorkofikis\, Nermin Mollaoğlu\, an
