DESCRIPTION:People of subcontinental heritage in Britain – ‘British As
ians’ or ‘British South Asians’ have a shared history of family migr
ation to the UK from India\, Pakistan\, Bangladesh\, Sri Lanka and Nepal.
Historically they have much in common\, and share many solidarities\, but
there are also significant political\, economic and cultural differences b
etween communities. Aimed at the non-specialist this talk will outline som
e of the key debates about - and between - British South Asians. As politi
cs in the Indian subcontinent continues to create conflicts between Britis
h Asians\, I’ll argue that understanding these differences matters for u
nderstanding modern Britain today. \n\nSpeaker details: Dr Yasmin Khan (D
