DESCRIPTION:What if we could restore movement and communication to people
who have lost them? What if you could control your phone or computer using
only your mind? What if your thoughts could be read – or even hacked? C
ould neurotechnology unlock extraordinary new abilities – or threaten ou
r most basic freedoms? How will brain-computer interfaces reshape our unde
rstanding of identity\, autonomy\, and mental privacy? How can we protect
a right to cognitive liberty? And how might BCIs deepen our connection wit
h each other\, or enhance how we learn and create?\n\nJoin us to explore t
 hese questions – and many more – at Jesus College\, Oxford\, at 5:30 P
M on 14 May 2025.\n\nThis event brings together leading experts from neuro
science\, neurotechnology\, and ethics\, including Dr Hazem Zohny (Uehiro
Centre for Practical Ethics\, University of Oxford)\, Prof Marcello Ienca
(TUM)\, and Prof Andreas Schaefer (The Francis Crick Institute and UCL\, C
o-Founder of Paradromics). Together\, they will explore the promises and p
erils of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs)\, a technology rapidly moving fr
om science fiction into reality and raising urgent ethical\, legal\, and s
 ocietal challenges.\n\nExpect a lively panel discussion\, an audience Q&A\
, and a post-event reception. The event is free and open to all\, but regi
stration is required.\n\n📹 The event will be recorded and uploaded onli
ne. If you sign up\, we’ll email you a link once it’s available.\nSpea

DESCRIPTION:Join us on the 22nd of May for an interactive panel discussion
on the topic of "What makes effective conservation?" as part of the Grand
Challenges seminar series. We will be discussing key questions around con
servation success in the 21st century\, including: What is "effective" con
servation and how do we measure it? How do we foster collaboration between
local communities\, conservation practitioners\, researchers and funders?
Where should conservation funding come from and what is the role of natur
e-based finance? We will hear from a panel of researchers and practitioner
s across the fields of ecology\, anthropology and policy\, with time for a
udience participation and questions. The panel will be chaired by Amy Dick
man\, Professor of Wildlife Conservation at the University of Oxford\, fea
turing Dave Stone (Joint Nature Conservation Committee)\, Alexandra Zimmer
mann (Oxford Wildlife Conservation Research Unit)\, Sahil Nijhawan (Conser
vation anthropologist at UCL & ZSL) and Sophus zu Ermgassen (Ecological ec
onomist at University of Oxford) as speakers. The panel will take place at
5pm on the 22nd of May at the Jesus College Conference Center on Ship Str
 eet\, Oxford\, and will last approximately 90 minutes\, followed by a drin
ks reception. \nSpeakers:\nAmy Dickman (University of Oxford)\, Sophus zu

SUMMARY:How children\, scientists\, and AI systems learn - Professor Aliso
n Gopnik (University of California\, Berkeley)
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE-TIME:20250617T180000

UID:https://talks.ox.ac.uk/talks/id/92100d32-89f2-4948-ab00-4ed0dc8dc8ca/
DESCRIPTION:A common model of AI suggests that there is a single measure o
f intelligence\, often called AGI\, and that AI systems are agents who can
possess more or less of this intelligence. Cognitive science\, in contras
t\, suggests that there are multiple forms of intelligence and that these
intelligences trade-off against each other and have a distinctive developm
ental profile. The adult ability to accomplish goals and maximize utilitie
s is often seen as the quintessential form of intelligence. However\, this
ability to exploit is in tension with the ability to explore and to creat
e world models based on that exploration. Children are particularly adept
at exploration and model-building\, though at the cost of competent action
and decision-making. Human intelligence also relies heavily on cultural t
ransmission\, passing on information from one generation to the next\, and
children are also particularly adept at such learning. Thinking about exp
loration and transmission can change our approach to AI systems. Large lan
guage models and similar systems are best understood as cultural technolog
ies\, like writing\, pictures and print\, that enable information transmis
sion. In contrast\, our empirical work suggests that RL systems employing
an intrinsic objective of empowerment gain can help capture the exploratio
n and theory formation we see in both children and scientists. Empowerment
learning\, in particular\, may help construct causal models both in child
hood and in science.\nSpeakers:\nProfessor Alison Gopnik (University of Ca
 lifornia\, Berkeley)
