The Future is Now: Addressing Multidimensional Poverty for Sustainable Development (UNGA 80)
A better future for all is one in which poverty – described by the UN Secretary-General as “the greatest global challenge” – is a thing of the past. Poverty is a multidimensional phenomenon comprising interlinked deprivations in areas such as health, education and living standards, all of which require urgent coordinated action. This high-level side event on the margins of the 80th UN General Assembly will showcase advancements in addressing multidimensional poverty and to highlight international commitments to turning a corner on poverty.
This event brings together senior officials from governments and international organisations to discuss why poverty alleviation is pivotal for sustainable development, and how robust and comprehensive measurement tools, such as Multidimensional Poverty Indices (MPIs), are essential for guiding policies and programmes that aim to get back on track to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The UAE Framework for Global Climate Resilience, the Pact for the Future, the Sevilla Commitment and the draft declaration of the Second World Summit of Social Development have all echoed the urgent call to address multidimensional poverty. The United Nations is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, and its role in building better futures for all is more important than ever. This side meeting will be a key platform for leaders to share their experiences and reaffirm their commitments to accelerating poverty reduction through evidence-based and high-impact policy actions.
