Oxford Events, the new replacement for OxTalks, will launch on 16th March. The two-week OxTalks freeze period starts on Monday 2nd March. During this time, there will be no facility to publish or edit events. The existing OxTalks site will remain available to view during this period. To what degree can we say that endangered languages have intrinsic value in today’s global economy? What is the purpose of preserving and curating them? How might we determine the value of languages spoken by fewer than 10,000 people in the world? This seminar will address these questions by means of comparison with the ethics of animal conservation and the conservation of “charismatic” species such as polar bears and orangutans.
