Creating CVs and Cover Letters for Careers Beyond Academic Research (for researchers)

Are you wanting to apply for job roles beyond academic research? Creating a strong CV and Cover letter is vital to unlocking the next stage of the job application process. However, there can be many differences in the format and content of application materials focused towards a role beyond academia compared to one for university research positions.

This interactive workshop will outline the key building blocks of a CV structured for careers outside of academia research, share examples to help with formatting and language, and provide methods on how best to identify and translate your research skills and experience into language employers want to see.

You will take part in discussive sessions, plan changes to your own CV, and generate content for Cover Letters based on your own experience and skills.

By the end of this session you should be able to:

  • Describe the content elements of an effective CV
  • Recognise the differences in CV formats between academic research and career roles beyond academia
  • Identify your skills and experience relevant to employers’ requirements for use in CVs and Cover Letters
  • Practice writing Cover Letter paragraphs demonstrating your skills and experience using the STAR technique
