Diverse definitions of 'researchers': findings from the Research on Research project
The meaning of being a researcher varies across countries, institutions, disciplines and cultures. Who
are ‘researchers’? What are the challenges researchers at different career stages and from different
contexts are facing? What are the implications of different approaches to defining researchers?
In this session, we will present findings from the Research on Research project based at CGHE
(Centre for Global Higher Education). The project is an international comparative study involving
around 170 participants from the UK, Norway, Italy, Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong, as well
as other world regions. This presentation will explore diverse conceptualisations of ‘researchers’,
drawing on findings from interviews with stakeholders and policy analysis of research assessment
frameworks in the six systems.
