Publishing with Joule: Editorial Insights from Cell Press
Joule is one of the leading journals publishing energy research, covering a range of topics and scales from the fundamental understanding of energy-relevant phenomena, to the fabrication of devices and the development of policy and engineering solutions leading to the deployment of energy technologies in the real world.
In this talk we aim to introduce Joule, what we are looking for at the journal and provide more clarity on the role of an editor and the process of how we consider manuscripts. Further we will provide some advice from an editor’s perspective of what makes a paper suitable for Joule and how to approach preparing a paper for submission to the journal. We will also introduce the rest of Cell Press’ growing physical science portfolio, and opportunities to publish with them.

Kat Stephan is a Deputy Scientific editor at Joule. She received her PhD in physical chemistry from Brown University where she worked on x-ray
characterization of lithium-ion batteries. Kat became a scientific editor at Joule in 2019 where she primarily handles papers on electrochemical
energy storage. She developed the battery checklist used by physical science journals across Cell Press.

Andrew Wadsworth is a Senior Scientific Editor at Joule and is based in London. He obtained a PhD in Chemistry from Imperial College London in
2018, before spending three years as a postdoctoral researcher at Imperial College and the University of Oxford, where he investigated emerging
materials for photovoltaics and other electronics applications. Since joining the editorial team at Joule in 2021, Andrew has handled a range of energy research and is mainly responsible for the solar and photovoltaics research at the journal. Andrew is keen to bridge the gap between industry and academic research at Joule to strengthen the real-world viability of energy technologies.
