At a time when the headlines are full of concerns over how nations communicate, Nick Cull presents the conclusions of his new book on the public aspects of diplomacy. Hitherto best known for his injunction that ‘public diplomacy begins with listening’, he will present four fresh priorities for public diplomacy in the present era of crisis: developing ‘reputational security’, countering disinformation, countering victim narratives and articulating a vision of the future. Despite the enormity of the challenge he insists on remaining optimistic that communication can buck the current trend of deepening the problem and become the corner stone of lasting international solutions.

Nick Cull is Professor of Public Diplomacy at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California, where he is the founding director of the Master’s programme in Public Diplomacy. He has just completed a Visiting Fellowship with the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism.
