Following clinical training in Internal Medicine, he spent 2 years at the NIH before returning to Washington University where he began his studies in the field of glycobiology. His early work dealt with the structure and biosynthesis of Asn-linked oligosaccharides in mammalian systems. Most recently his lab has focused on the mannose 6-phosphate recognition system which mediates the trafficking of newly synthesized acid hydrolases to lysosomes.
