The publication of Theodor Nöldeke’s Mandäische Grammatik (1875) was a turning point in the study of the Mandaic dialect and of Mandaic literature in general, and it remains one of the cornerstones of research on Babylonian Aramaic to this day. This lecture will consider the legacy of Nöldeke’s seminal study, while also discussing more recent developments in the research of the Babylonian Aramaic dialects which have supplemented his work and better placed it in its linguistic context.
Matthew Morgenstern is Professor in the Department of Hebrew Language and Semitic Linguistics at Tel Aviv University, specializing particularly in Jewish and Mandaean Babylonian Aramaic texts. He has previously worked on publishing the Dead Sea Scrolls and has written on the Hebrew and Aramaic of the Second Temple period.
