International Women's Day: In conversation with...Joeli Brearley
Our annual International Women’s Day talk. Kellogg Fellow Dr Yasmin Khan will be in conversation with Joeli Brearley.

About the speaker:

Joeli Brearley writes for the Telegraph and the Independent and speaks about the motherhood penalty all over the world. She is one of the Observer’s 50 New Radicals of 2018, an Amnesty International Women Human Rights Defender, winner of the Northern Power Women ‘Agent for Change’ award, and her national demonstration – ‘March of the Mummies’ – won PR Week top campaign. She was described by Elle Magazine as: ‘Fearsome and funny.’ Her writing on the issue was described by one Telegraph commenter as: ‘A massive pile of whiny nonsense.’

Two days after she informed her employer that she was pregnant with her first child, Joeli Brearley was sacked from her job by voicemail. She was four months pregnant and unemployed with bills to pay. Joeli considered taking legal action but then found out she was having a high-risk pregnancy and could go into labour at any moment. Her career and confidence were at rock-bottom and the health of her baby was in jeopardy.

Realising that her experience was not unique, Joeli launched Pregnant Then Screwed on International Women’s Day in 2015, as a space for mothers to share their stories of discrimination. The project quickly grew and today Pregnant Then Screwed is a charity dedicated to ending the motherhood penalty, supporting tens of thousands of women each year, and successfully campaigning for change.

This in-person event is free and open to all. Registration is required.

Refreshments will be served from 17:00. The talk will begin at 17:30, followed by a drinks reception at 18:30.

This event will be photographed and filmed. If you do not wish to appear in the photographs/footage, please let the photographer/videographer know. Should you have any further queries, or unable to attend after booking, please contact events@kellogg.ox.ac.uk.
