Imperial Wave: How Empire Shaped the Network of Wireless in South Asia at the Turn of the 20th Century
The presentation will explore the role of the Indian Telegraph Department, the British Post Office, and
capital concerns like the Marconi International Marine Communication and Lloyds, exposing their mutual rivalries
in attempting to create a viable wireless network. The Marconi archive at the Bodleian throws light on
how the Marconi Company promoted itself in this region, and reveals how certain parts of India not directly
under British control may have tried to modernize themselves along the lines of the colonial state.
