Mulholland’s book is the story of Emmanuel Barthélemy was a French émigré who lived in Victorian London and gained notoriety as murderer. However, he was no common or garden criminal. Barthélemy was a revolutionary renegade from France who had manned the barricades in Paris and knew Karl Marx. Mulholland summons up the world of aftermath of the French Revolution and the dingy London underworld.

Marc Mulholland is Wolfson Fellow and Tutor in History at St Catherine’s College and Professor of Modern History at the University of Oxford. Marc was born in Ireland and took his PhD at Queen’s College Belfast.
