This presentation is part of the IMI Seminar Series, Trinity term 2015.
Since 2005, more than 50 000 migrants from Sudan and Eritrea have crossed the Egyptian border to seek refuge in Israel. While first perceived as entitled to protection, they have soon been the objects of policies blocking their incorporation in the Israeli system and maintaining them in a legal grey zone. Against this backdrop, this presentation focuses on the discourses by which the (non-)policies of asylum in Israel have been underpinned and examines how these discourses have contributed to reshaping the boundaries of the Israeli polity.
