Reimagining Dialogical Pedagogies in Museum Education

How can museums become spaces of shared learning, inclusion, and transformation?

This panel brings together five dynamic voices, from across South Africa and Oxford. Featuring invited collaborator Puleng Plessie, Curator of Education and Public Programmes at the Javett Art Centre, South Africa, University of Pretoria, the panel will explore how museums can transform into spaces of mutual learning, inclusion, and dialogue.

Alongside Dr Jason Todd (University of Oxford), Melanie Rowntree (Ashmolean Museum), Dr Abigail Branford (University of Oxford), and Dr Georgia Nasseh (2024–25 BRIDGE Fellow, University of Cambridge), the panel will reflect on how museum spaces can move beyond traditional, top-down teaching models. Rooted in Paulo Freire’s pedagogy, this discussion will focus on how dialogical, participatory practices can shift power dynamics and create opportunities for equitable learning.

The session will include an extended Q&A, inviting the audience to contribute their experiences and questions.

This event is part of the BRIDGE Fellowship, a collaboration between the Javett Art Centre and The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities.
