LEAPS: A 2-Generation Approach for Early Childhood and Youth Development

In Pakistan, there is inadequate access to Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) for pre-schoolers. In Sindh province, 84% of children do not have access to ECCE. Lack of access and poor quality of programs is compounded by inadequate recruitment, training, and professional development of the early childhood workforce. Simultaneously, demand for training and employment opportunities among Pakistan’s youth is a high priority: 64% of Pakistan’s population is under age 30 years, and nearly one-third of youth aged 15-24 years are not in education, employment, or training, with inequities among female youth and in rural communities. Responding to these challenges, LEAPS is a youth-led ECCE program in which female youth (18-24 years) are trained to deliver high-quality ECCE for children (3.5-5.5 years) in communities without access to ECCE programs. Implemented in 4 districts using a cluster-stepped wedge design, this talk will share the findings from this program on young children and youth.
