Antibiotic Resistance

Oxford Biomedical Research Centre: bringing research to life through public talks

Refreshments from 6.00pm, talk 6.30pm – 7.30pm

Angela Brueggemann, Associate Professor at the University of Oxford’s Nuffield Department of Medicine, will discuss the issues around the increasing prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in hospitals and the community. Antibiotics have been in use for over seven decades but when bacteria become resistant to the effect of the antibiotics then bacterial infections can become difficult to treat. Antimicrobial resistance is now considered a serious global threat and there is an urgent need for new antimicrobial drugs, which led to Prime Minister David Cameron announcing an independent review into the issue in July of last year.
