Re-inventing Organisations: Service Improvements and Culture
This workshop will explore the links between leadership, improvement and culture within a healthcare context, and the opportunities and challenges associated with this kind of change. Is it a necessary, realistic and feasible? And what is the role of change agents and leaders in bringing it about?

John Drew will share a model from Reinventing Organizations, by Frederic Laloux, which describes how organisations are changing or evolving over time, and make the case for a fundamental rethink of our core assumptions rather than just tinkering with structures and processes. He will then describe some of the challenges of applying this thinking in the NHS environment, drawing on his current experiences as well as an approach and set of tools developed by the NHS Leadership Academy to change Leadership and Culture in NHS providers.

We will then work together in groups to apply some of these tools and approaches to actual situations to make it practical, sharing our findings and ideas before the close.

The workshop, which will be highly interactive, will start with sign in and tea and coffee from 09:00 to 09:30 and end with lunch at 13:00.

09:00 Tea / coffee and sign in

09:30 Reinventing Organisations: understanding and challenging our own assumptions and paradigms about organisations

10:45 Break for tea/coffee

11:00 Linking Leadership, Improvement & Culture: understanding how leadership creates the conditions for improvement and shapes culture, and how to measure these changes.

What do leaders need to do to create the kind of culture we want and need to ‘deliver compassionate excellence’?

What does an improvement methodology look like and how do we apply it to real-world problems?

What else can we do to encourage and cultivate a healthy, open culture which is conducive to excellent patient care and staff experience
