OxTalks will soon move to the new Halo platform and will become 'Oxford Events.' There will be a need for an OxTalks freeze. This was previously planned for Friday 14th November – a new date will be shared as soon as it is available (full details will be available on the Staff Gateway).
In the meantime, the OxTalks site will remain active and events will continue to be published.

The Greek Orthodox of Istanbul: Christian-Muslim Relations at the Nexus of Historical Memory, Trauma, and Cosmopolitanism

This presentation will discuss the modern history of the native Greek Orthodox Christian community of Istanbul, the Romioi (or Rum In Turkish). As inheritors of the tradition of Byzantine Constantinople, but also centuries-long residents of Istanbul, the identity and experiences of this community are shaped by interfaith relationships. This presentation will trace the history of the Romioi from the time of the Tanzimat in the early-mid 19th century up to the present day, focusing on their relationship with Muslims in the city and exploring such issues as interfaith cultural and sacred practices, the trauma of marginalization and communal decline, and the global significance of this community for the future of Christian-Muslim relations.
