OxTalks is Changing
OxTalks will soon move to the new Halo platform and will become 'Oxford Events.' There will be a need for an OxTalks freeze. This was previously planned for Friday 14th November – a new date will be shared as soon as it is available (full details will be available on the Staff Gateway).
In the meantime, the OxTalks site will remain active and events will continue to be published.
If staff have any questions about the Oxford Events launch, please contact halo@digital.ox.ac.uk
Transnational Elite Sociality: Clubs and Associations in Semi-colonial Shanghai
Please note: Mandarin Presentation English PPT Bilingual Q&A
Sandwich Lunch Provided – sign-up essential.
Yanan Ding probes the sociality of the old clubs and associations in Shanghai after its opening up as a treaty port city. Operating under imperial extraterritoriality, clubs in old Shanghai transplanted the social hierarchy from their home country and were highly formal and rule bound. The clubs of the Shanghailanders were the product of colonialism as well as localism. The emergence of social clubs is indicative of Shanghai’s historical development as a cosmopolitan city. This study adds to the literature on the urban history of China a unique and underexplored perspective.
Dr Ding is Swire-Cathy Pacific Visiting Academic at St Antony’s College and Advisory Board Member of Local Environment: the International Journal of Justice and Sustainability.
