The Director of the Palestinian children’s charity, ‘Project Hope’ is currently touring the UK to talk about his organisation’s work and the ongoing efforts to advance peace in Palestine. In his Oxford lecture, Hakim Sabbah will be discussing the challenges facing NGOs operating in the West Bank, his charity’s youth education initiatives, and the current political situation in Palestine and the city of Nablus. The talk will also provide information for those interested in volunteering in Palestine and will be followed by a Q&A session.
Wine and light refreshments will be provided.
Project Hope was founded in Nablus in 2003 in the midst of the Second Intifada (uprising). During this period, Nablus was a city under siege – tanks patrolled the streets, checkpoints divided the city and families were trapped in their homes because of gunfire in the streets and curfews imposed by the Israeli army. In this context, two Palestinians and a Canadian founded Project Hope in order to provide classes to children unable to go to school.
Thirteen years later, Project Hope has become the largest international volunteer organisation in the northern West Bank. Every month, it provides classes ranging from English to Yoga to more than a thousand students in the city and its surrounding villages. It has become a symbol for building hope for the future.
