“The connection between Byzantine Cappadocia and Antioch: churches and their iconography between the fourth and the seventh centuries”

In the fourth-seventh centuries there were many common elements between the culture of Cappadocia and that of Antioch. My paper will present some of those with regard to the churches and the monasteries within the area, thus:
Firstly, the iconographical motifs that decorate the walls of the cave-churches in the former came from Antioch; most of those represent apocryphal religious stories that circulated in the area. Secondly, the schools –all attached to the above mentioned institutions– were modelled on those in Antioch, in particular on that of Libanius.
Visual elements to prove these assertions will be provided.
