Activity-based approaches for mining the ubiquitin system

Professor Virdee is a program leader at the MRC Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit, University of Dundee. He graduated from the University of Surrey in Computer-Aided Chemistry and then carried out a PhD in chemical and structural biology under the supervision of Prof. Gabriel Waksman (FRS). We then undertook postdoctoral research with Profs. Jason Chin (FRS) and David Komander at the LMB (Cambridge). His lab uses protein-based chemical probes to investigate the regulation and structure of ubiquitin E3 ligase (E3) enzymes. Using this approach his lab has identified novel classes of E3 enzymes that contain novel folds and use unprecedented mechanisms. These discoveries have also kickstarted the exciting field of non-lysine ubiquitination which his lab is also investigating. In this talk, Professor Virdee will summarise his labs research in these areas.
