The pneumococcus resides in the human airway as a commensal, and occasionally causes pneumonia or septicaemia. The talk will highlight the recent discovery of a genetic switch that leads to epigenetic changes in gene expression, that might mediate the transition of this bacterium from harmless coloniser to deadly pathogen.
