“A family’s experience in the Holocaust”

Emeritus Professor Sir Peter Hirsch, is a German Jewish Refugee and world renowned physicist, born in Berlin in 1925, had his Bar Mitzvah under the Nazis in Berlin 1939 before escaping Nazi Germany on the kindertransport. He will relate the tragic story of his family during the Holocaust and his own life under the Nazis. He is formerly the Isaac Wolfson Professor of Metallurgy, 1966-1992, Head of Department of Metallurgy and Materials, 1966-1982 and 1984-1992, and Part-time Chairman, United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, 1982-1984. He was Fellow of St Edmund Hall, 1966-1992, and Emeritus Fellow since 1992. He has received many awards for his fundamental contribution to physics, including the Franklin J. Clamer Medal (1970), Hughes Medal (1973), Royal Medal (1977), Wolf Prize in Physics (1983/4), as well as the Lomonosov Gold Medal of Russian Academy of Sciences (2005).
